Media Release - 4th June 2010

Kaplan Professional exceeds target for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Raises a total of $63, 240 to help kids in need.

Kaplan Professional has exceeded its fundraising goal for the Starlight Children’s Foundation raising $63,240 to help children in need.

This follows a successful auction last night where $11,380 was raised for the charity under a community partnership to raise $50,000 this year.

This partnership forms part of Kaplan Professional’s corporate and social responsibilities, which endeavours to make real and positive changes by supporting Australian communities.

Neil Shilbury, CEO, Kaplan, said, “Many of our Kaplan Professional employees are very passionate about Starlight because it is a well respected children’s charity. The money raised tonight will contribute to our goal of raising $50,000 this year which we have now exceeded.

“The funds raised from last night’s auction will contribute towards the $44,860 already raised by Kaplan Professional staff.”

‘We also contributed a further $10,000 to assist with the important work that Starlight is doing which brings us to the grand total of $63,240.

“It is very important for us to be able to participate and assist with a worthy cause like Starlight because it assists children in need and also enables our staff support a worthy cause,” Mr Shilbury said.

“Starlight relies on the generosity of organisations like Kaplan to give seriously ill and hospitalised children the opportunity to access and benefit from Starlight’s programs, which help to restore the fun, laughter and joy that serious illness takes away,” said Louise Baxter, CEO of the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“The demand for Starlight’s programs continues to grow with over 600,000 child admissions to hospitals each year around Australia. Starlight currently only reaches ‘one in three’ of these children and their families”.

“The funds raised by Kaplan Professional will help give more of these children the opportunity to access and benefit from Starlight’s innovative programs.”

Mr Shilbury added, “At Kaplan we have been encouraging our staff to take part in Starlight’s programs and activities to get an idea of how their contributions are helping sick children.

“Our partnership with Starlight is one we value and take very seriously and we have already developed fundraising activities to help as much as we can”.

These fundraising projects included:

The ‘Go Green’ initiative – The 'Go Green' option allows students enrolling in Kaplan Professional postgraduate education, vocational education or real estate courses to choose to receive their study notes saved on a USB flash drive rather than receiving paper notes. This not only contributes to helping the environment by conserving paper but Kaplan donates $5 for each student who chooses this option to Starlight Children’s Foundation.
• Workplace Giving Program – where employees were provided the option to donate a small portion of their weekly pre-tax salary to Starlight.
• Staff Social Clubs –holding fundraising events such as trivia nights, competitions and raffles.
